On August 7th, 2023, at the International Training Institute for Materials Science (ITIMS), the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the Vietnam Materials Research Society (V-MRS) and the Korean Materials Research Society (K-MRS) took place.
At the signing ceremony, representing K-MRS were Prof. Dr. Chang Sik Son, President; Prof. Dr. Jin Hyeok Kim, First Vice President; Prof. Dr. Dojin Kim, Chungnam National University, Former President of K-MRS; Prof. Dr. Jong-Ryul Jeong, Chungnam National University, and Prof. Dr. Jae Hyun Kim, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST).
On the V-MRS side, there were: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Chien, President; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuc Duong, Director of ITIMS, Standing Committee member; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Lam, Director of School of Engineering Physics, Standing Committee member; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Hoa, Vice Rector of School of Materials, Standing Committee member; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Quy, ITIMS; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Xuan Viet, ITIMS; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Xuan Hien, School of Engineering Physics, and several other scientists.

Following the signing ceremony, representatives from both sides provided an overview of their organizational activities, common areas of potential cooperation, collaboration, and mutual support. Notably, K-MRS proposed the idea of organizing an international materials science conference called the Global Conference on Innovative Materials (GCIM). The GCIM is to host a prominent Asian-scale conference similar to the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) conference or the Materials Research Society (MRS) conference in the United States. Previously, K-MRS held biannual conferences - the Spring Meeting and the Fall Meeting. Starting in 2023, there will be only one K-MRS conference each year, the Fall Meeting, while the Spring Meeting will be replaced by the international GCIM conference. GCIM will take place on the famous Jeju Island.
K-MRS also announced that students from countries that have signed the MoU with K-MRS, such as Vietnam, will receive a partial reduction in conference fees and accommodation costs when attending the conference.
K-MRS expressed their interest in receiving an invitation to attend SPMS 2023 as representatives of K-MRS. They also proposed the idea of establishing a Vietnamese-Korean branch within the framework of SPMS or in the formation of a Parallel Symposium.
